This thing was so huge it dominated the Shilo landscape. It could be seen from as far away as Brandon.
The Tower In Winter
They blew the tower up about 5 years ago. I bet they regret it now that PPCLI is moving in.
The Old Fire Hall - ca.1964
Nothing but the most up to date equipment!
The Honest John Rocket Remembered
When the Honest John was first introduced to Shilo they had a live fire demonstration. They invited all of the high school students to witness the event. They had erected a snow fence behind which we all stood. It was quite a crowd, students, teachers, army personel, media. The missile was very impressive even though it doesn't look it in the photograph. A soldier was to stay in the truck until just moments before the firing. Several other soldiers were in a bunker maybe 30-50 yards from the rocket. They had set up a loud speaker to broadcast the count down. Like the scenes we had seen on TV of American launches, our boys were quite serious in counting down. 10-9-(soldier scrambles from the vehicle, slamming the door behind him as he sprints for the bunker) 3-2-1, FIRE! Then, nothing. The announcer says "We seem to have a problem." A big problem I would say. The rocket remained on the truck. It seems that when the soldier slammed the door, he did so on a very important wire, shorting it out and ruining the media event. After some time they did fire the rocket and it disappeared immediately. It was there; then it was gone. Just a bright spike of light many miles away. It was amazing!
Shilo from the Air
There seems to be a few more trees than I rember. This shot was taken around 1995 because the jump tower is no longer visible.
The Artillery Park There are a number of very rare and unusual pieces stored in this park. It is unfortunate they have not been restored to decent museum quality condition.
Douglas Community Hall Always a familiar sight on the way to Brandon or Winnipeg. I'm surprised it's still standing and the machine gun is still there. Doug Jordan submitted this.
Base HQ - BLDG L102
from Doug Jordan
O'Kelly School This is how the building looks today. Another from Doug.
Princess Elizabeth High School It is now a community center. I'm not sure where the older kids go now. Maybe they are still busing them to Brandon. Another Doug shot.
The Skating Rink Lots of Pee Wee action in this place!
The Shilo Church Actually there are two of them. This is the Protestant one, St. Barbera's Chapel.
Strange Hall
I don't know how many games of pool I played in this place. It was pretty cheap to play a game. So were the movies at 25 cents each. Great gym and swimming pool too.
PEHS In 1988
The 1951 Flood
Even Shilo was affected by the 1951 floods. Here is Sgt.Howie looking at the back yard in some consternation. Brian Howie may be one of the kids in this shot.
The Old YPA Hall
If you remember this place you are about my age. This is the old YPA hall and a Saturday night gathering point for us before the new Youth Center was built for us. Girls bathroom on the left and guys on the right at the back of the stage. One stall, one sink, one mirror. Not sure how many gallons of Old Spice were applied in that bathroom. I think the girls were using something different. This was the place to be on Saturday night and holds many happy memories for me. Thanks Bruce! His father is dancing with an unidentified lady here. Looks like Beannie Hill in the background with her arm in the air and maybe Zoe Fowler on the right but not sure.
Front Stage of the YPA
The first true Shilo band....the Saints. Good clear shot of the boys and of the stage area. Note the high tech equipment. Great light shows and fireworks when one of the guys blew an amp. We had it all. Jerry Crowder, Rennie Siriani, Brian and Bruce Howie. A GO-GO '64
Yup...you guessed it. The Shilo Country Club.
